Study Description

US 93 serves as the major regional transportation route connecting the Phoenix metropolitan area to northwest Arizona and beyond.  The highway carries increasingly heavy local and regional traffic, with trucks comprising nearly 30 percent of the existing traffic volume.  This traffic demand has overtaxed the capacity of the existing route. Perhaps the most critical element of that segment is the portion within Wickenburg, where narrow roadways, dense development, and a restrictive, signalized intersection cause persistent, severe traffic congestion; localized air pollution and elevated noise levels; and safety concerns due to a higher potential for pedestrian/vehicle conflicts. 

Because of the physical and environmental constraints along the US 93 corridor through Wickenburg, adding lanes to the existing roadway is not a feasible alternative because it would result in serious alterations to Wickenburg’s historic downtown area and the displacement of numerous businesses.  In addition, current concerns about safety and localized air/noise pollution would not be alleviated.  Therefore, a bypass of the Wickenburg community would be the more prudent option. Accordingly, ADOT is conducting a comprehensive study to investigate and identify feasible transportation/route corridors for relocating US 93 around Wickenburg. The purpose of the US 93 Wickenburg bypass study is to identify, evaluate, and recommend feasible corridor alternatives for rerouting US 93 around the town of Wickenburg to enhance traffic operations and meet future traffic demands while addressing air, noise, and safety concerns.

The Wickenburg bypass corridors extend from near the US 93/SR 89 junction to near the US 60/State Route (SR) 74 junction within Maricopa and Yavapai Counties, Arizona. The corridors cross the foothills of the Vulture and Black Mountains, encountering numerous drainageways, including Sols Wash and the Hassayampa River. Avoidance of the Hassayampa Nature Preserve, located south of the US 60 bridge crossing in Wickenburg, is of paramount importance. Due to the sensitivity of the wildlife habitat provided by the cottonwood-willow riparian forest along the Hassayampa River, river crossing concepts will minimize vegetation removal, provide near-perpendicular crossings to minimize floodplain and wetland encroachments, and limit the amount of streambed disturbance. In so doing, the project will reduce impacts to riparian habitat and water resources. Locating the river crossing well south of the Preserve's ecosystem will decrease traffic on US 60/93 adjacent to the Preserve, reducing noise levels that disturb wildlife and Preserve visitors, improving ambient air quality by removing pollutant sources, and reducing the potential for vehicle-wildlife conflicts and hazardous materials concerns.

Major cuts and fills, including rock excavation, will be associated with the bypass route due to the severe terrain being crossed. Bridges and box culverts will be required for crossing major drainages as well as for providing wildlife passageways. Through the use of independent roadway alignments and varying median widths, geologic formations will be avoided and visual impacts will be minimized to produce alternatives that complement the natural landscape. Careful consideration will be given to mitigation of impacts on established equestrian trails, recreational areas, sensitive habitats, and cultural resources. In addition, avoidance of guest ranches, behavioral treatment facilities, mining claims, and patent lands is essential.
